Preservice Teachers Gather to Sharpen Test-Taking Skills

Senior students from the College of Teacher Education at the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) convened at Tadena Hall for a program aimed at enhancing the test-taking skills of preservice teachers, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education. The initiative is designed to improve students’ chances of success in the Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers by fostering critical thinking skills necessary for tackling exam questions effectively. Featured speakers included Ms. Darigold Apopo, a topnotcher from the 2016 board exam, and Dr. Edmar Paguirigan, who excelled in the 2014 board exam. Apopo currently teaches at the Philippine Science High School, Ilocos Region Campus, while Paguirigan is a faculty member at the UNP-CTE Laboratory Schools. This program not only supports academic success but also promotes a culture of excellence in education, empowering future educators to achieve their professional goals.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) proudly sends its best wishes to Ligaya Lychelle Villalon and Bea Angelina Duldulao, the first pre-service teachers from the Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSEd) major in English program, as they embark on an enriching internship at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia from October 19 to November 16, 2023. Selected for the 9th Batch SEA Teacher Student Exchange Program organized by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO), these exceptional students will gain invaluable practical experience in teaching within a different cultural context. This program directly contributes to Quality Education (SDG 4) by helping pre-service teachers develop essential teaching skills, adapt to diverse learning environments, and enhance their pedagogical approaches. Moreover, the initiative promotes global perspectives and fosters a culture of lifelong learning, ensuring that these future educators are well-equipped to face the challenges of teaching in today’s interconnected world.


This student exchange program aligns with

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) welcomed 15 inbound Indonesian students on September 27 as part of the SEA-Teacher Project, an exchange program in Southeast Asia for pre-service student teachers. The students, from five Indonesian partner universities, were greeted in a program held at the UNP Auditorium. The event featured welcome remarks from key figures, including Dr. Ma. Teresa Susan L. Manzano, Dean of the College of Teacher Education, who highlighted the benefits of internationalization in education. UNP President Erwin F. Cadorna expressed his vision for global recognition through SEAMEO programs, while CHED Region I Director Dr. Christine Nabor-Ferrer extended her greetings via video. The students will participate in teaching activities at UNP’s Laboratory Schools. Faculty from various UNP colleges also attended the event.

The college boasts an impressive overall passing rate of 89.71%, significantly surpassing national averages. Notably, two graduates secured spots in the Top 10 for the Bachelor of Elementary Education program, demonstrating excellence in teacher preparation. Under the leadership of Dr. Erwin F. Cadorna and Dr. Ma. Teresa Susan L. Manzano, the UNP community celebrates these accomplishments as a testament to their dedication to fostering quality education and empowering future educators.

The Mental Health Caravan, conducted three times in 2023, aimed to raise mental health awareness, debunk stigma, and create a supportive environment for youth in various school communities in Ilocos Sur. Spearheaded by the BS Psychology Program in collaboration with the Provincial Youth Development Office and local schools, the caravans featured psychological counseling, support sessions, and interactive activities.


This initiative aligns with SDG target 4.7, which emphasizes promoting global citizenship and sustainable development through education. By focusing on youth mental health, Project Hiraya contributes to creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment where young people can thrive and develop their full potential. The Mental Health Caravans address a critical aspect of well-being that often goes overlooked, particularly in the context of education. The registration of diploma programs with TESDA enhances the quality of education provided to students, ensuring they receive recognized and standardized training that prepares them for employment. On December 4, 2023, the University of Northern Philippines College of Engineering hosted a lecture series titled Empowering Engineers: A Lecture Series on Morality and Mental Health at the UNP Gymnasium. Designed for engineering students, the event aimed to recalibrate their moral compass and strengthen their mental resilience. Two distinguished speakers, Randolfo Lopez, MaEd, Head SGOA, and Dr. Rolando “Dem” Mina Mamaat, RPSY, LPT, shared their insights on moral re-engineering and mental fortitude. Mr. Lopez emphasized the importance of deep self-reflection to turn weaknesses into strengths, encouraging students to adopt a positive mindset and practice personal transformation. Dr. Mamaat, on the other hand, stressed the significance of mental well-being, urging students to embrace self-awareness and empathy while facing life’s challenges. Her mantra, “Pause muna, peace muna,” encouraged students to take moments of respite to regain peace amidst stress. This event aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, as it promoted not just academic learning but the development of emotional intelligence and ethical values essential for holistic growth. The Project E2Row aims to educate adopted communities about the recent and emerging trends in computing. On March 27, 2023, the College, in collaboration with the UNP Student Council, implemented a training workshop for student leaders of the Lipit National High School. Specifically, the trainees learned about MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and Netiquette.


This activity aligns with
SDG target 4.4, which aims to increase the number of people with relevant skills for financial success, including entrepreneurship and decent work. By providing training on essential software applications like MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint, Project E2Row equips student leaders with valuable digital literacy skills. This activity is customary and a long time tradition that law students, faculty and staff of the college as well as administrative officials who will go to the bar exam testing venues to extend support (morally, physically, psychologically and emotionally) to our bar examinees.  This gesture uplifts their morale to hurdle the bar exam. Our simple way of showing them our support through mentoring/coaching to relieve their stress, offering an assistance with their transportation and accommodation, providing them healthy meals before and during the bar exam, supplying them with UNP Balligi Notes will make their exam journey bearable to get through. Indeed, it is a factor to improve our performance in the bar examination.

This activity aligns with SDG target 4.3, which aims to ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational, and tertiary education, including university. By providing comprehensive support to bar examinees, including mentoring, transportation assistance, accommodation, meals, and study materials, the College of Law demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that students have the necessary resources to succeed in their legal education and professional aspirations. On January 16, 2023, the College of Hospitality and Tourism Management specifically the BS Hospitality Management program under the subjects, HMPE 1 – Gastronomy (Food and Culture) and HPC 1 – Kitchen Essentials and Basic Food Preparations conducted a culminating activity. It showcased the talents and skills of 1st Year BSHM students as they applied theoretical knowledge by preparing traditional Western cuisine and fusing it with other dishes, providing an opportunity to appreciate the food and culture of Western countries.

The second-year BS Marine Biology students were enrolled in MBio 101- Oceanography 1 subject. This subject is designed to examine the basic concepts of the physical setup of the oceans (Geology, Physics) approach. As part of this subject, they will undergo fieldwork, including trying out their constructed device for current (drogue), measuring the tide height and checking the ebb tide, and identifying sediment in the coastal area. This fieldwork aims to develop and enhance skills in fundamental knowledge in assessing currents, tides, and sediments

This activity aligns with SDG Target 4.4, which aims to increase the number of people with relevant skills for financial success, including entrepreneurship and decent work. By providing hands-on fieldwork experience in oceanography, the MBio 101 course equips students with practical skills and knowledge relevant to marine science and related industries. The fieldwork component, which includes constructing and testing a drogue, measuring tide height, and identifying sediments, allows students to apply theoretical concepts in a real-world setting, enhancing their understanding and developing essential skills for future careers in marine biology and related fields.

Dita, associate professor at the De La Salle University, was invited to discuss the said topic with a bonus lecture on World Englishes, particularly the importance of promoting the Philippine English variety.
