SDG 1 - NO POVERTY

The University of Northern Philippines has manifested a strong commitment to poverty eradication through different initiatives that integrate education, research, and community engagement across multiple dimensions of SDG 1. UNP prioritizes livelihood training through targeted programs in soap making, fish and meat processing, t-shirt printing, and agri-products marketing across Ilocos Sur and neighboring provinces. The University Extension Office (UEO) collaborates with various colleges to deliver community-based training, extending reach even to Persons Deprived of Liberty at the provincial jail to facilitate economic reintegration. These hands-on programs provide marginalized communities with marketable skills and new income sources, directly addressing economic vulnerability.

UNP forges multi-stakeholder collaborations to increase impact, including partnerships with the DSWD KALAHI-CIDSS Cash-for-Work Program, which provided employment to 500 graduates, and the Ilocos Sur Provincial Police Office for skills training in Sta. Lucia. The University signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Bullalayaw organization for institutionalized livelihood training and engages with the National Nutrition Council and Scaling Up Nutrition Movement Network, recognizing the interconnection between nutrition security and poverty reduction. The College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA) conducts needs assessment surveys to ensure interventions are contextually appropriate, while the College of Social Work hosts Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) training to strengthen social protection systems. The successful Level IV accreditation of CBAA's graduate programs ensures high-quality education that produces professionals capable of driving economic development and mobilizing resources for poverty eradication.

UNP's flagship "Tubay ken Muli" extension project and the 3rd Bayani Challenge represent the University's commitment to comprehensive community development. Cultural preservation intersects with economic opportunity through programs where a Manlilikha ng Bayan teaches traditional Ilocano forms like the dallot, providing income-generating skills while safeguarding heritage. The marine conservation partnership with Pagsanaaan Sur protects vital coastal resources, building community resilience against environmental and economic shocks. The University's designation of Development Policy Research Month underscores its commitment to evidence-based approaches to poverty reduction, while UEO training on effective packaging of extension documents enhances capacity to attract external funding and showcase community engagement projects to potential partners. Through systematic documentation and transparent monitoring of initiatives, UNP proves that effective poverty eradication requires coordinated action across skills development, strategic partnerships, academic excellence, cultural preservation, and environmental protection, positioning the University as a catalyst for sustainable development in the Ilocos region and beyond.
