SDG 8 - DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) demonstrates comprehensive commitment to decent work and economic growth through activities spanning employment generation, skills development, entrepreneurship promotion, and professional advancement. UNP actively creates employment opportunities through multiple recruitment announcements for administrative officers, part-time and permanent instructor positions, internal auditors, and various non-teaching plantilla positions, contributing to workforce expansion and institutional growth. The university celebrated graduates entering professional fields, congratulating new Registered Guidance Counselors who passed the licensure examination and supporting Master of Arts in Guidance and Counseling graduates preparing for their professional exams, highlighting the critical pathway from education to decent work.
UNP empowers communities and students with practical skills for income generation and economic participation. The College of Business Administration and Accountancy conducted skills training on fish and meat processing, empowering community members with practical capabilities to generate income and start small businesses. The CBAA's Office of Business and Accountancy Services provided financial literacy programs to Nagtupacan Elementary School, promoting responsible financial behavior from a young age essential for long-term economic growth and financial inclusion. The Department of Languages and Humanities and College of Business Administration and Accountancy held training on human resource development and financial management, essential for improving work skills and professional growth aligning with decent work standards. The university provided driving lessons to seminarians through a formal agreement, equipping them with practical skills for employment mobility and economic participation.
UNP fosters entrepreneurship and business development through strategic partnerships and events. The College of Business Administration and Accountancy celebrated its 25th Annual Business Week promoting innovation, entrepreneurial skills, and economic growth through networking opportunities and business showcases. The university organized the 2024 UNP Sukisok Pagsapulan in collaboration with the Department of Labor and Employment and local government units, focusing on job and career opportunities connecting graduates with potential employers. UNP provided technical support for Bantay's Kaldingan Festival, demonstrating engagement supporting local tourism and economic activities contributing to community economic development. The university partnered with TESDA and the Women's League to provide skills training and employment opportunities promoting equal access to decent work for women. A partnership with Bank of the Philippine Islands brought financial services on campus, promoting financial inclusion and economic empowerment for students and staff enabling access to banking services, savings accounts, and financial management tools.
UNP enhances workforce competitiveness through professional development and quality education. The university celebrated re-accreditations for programs in the College of Criminal Justice Education, College of Engineering, and College of Teacher Education, enhancing education quality and improving graduates' employability in competitive job markets. The College of Arts and Sciences launched "CAS: Cultura, Aglawlaw ken Sika" radio program on DZNS promoting Ilokano culture and community engagement, supporting local creative and cultural industries contributing to economic growth through cultural preservation and media engagement. Job opportunity alerts connected students with career paths at the National Economic and Development Authority, linking graduates with economic development agencies and policy-making institutions. Through initiatives spanning employment generation, skills training, financial literacy, entrepreneurship promotion, professional development, and strategic partnerships, UNP demonstrates that achieving decent work and economic growth requires coordinated efforts across workforce development, business incubation, financial inclusion, and quality education, positioning the university as a catalyst for economic advancement in the Ilocos region while producing graduates equipped with technical competencies, entrepreneurial mindsets, and professional credentials necessary for meaningful employment and economic contribution.
