SDG 1 - NO POVERTY

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) is actively tackling poverty through its holistic approach to education, research, and community engagement. As a key player in the Ilocos region’s sustainable development, UNP integrates poverty alleviation into its core functions.

UNP’s academic programs, particularly the Bachelor of Science in Social Work, Criminal Justice Education, and Master of Public Administration Major in Culture-based Governance, produce professionals who directly contribute to implementing social protection, and responsible systems. The University also offers scholarships, and financial assistance to students from low-income families, ensuring equal access to education.

Research at UNP focuses on poverty-related issues, aligning with SDG target 1.a. The University’s Extension Office runs a flagship program aimed at empowering individuals, and communities through sustainable economic activities, moral recovery programs, and financial literacy initiatives.

Further, UNP collaborates with local government units, NGOs, and the private sector to implement poverty reduction strategies. This multi-stakeholder approach reflects SDG target 1.b, emphasizing the creation of sound policy frameworks at various levels.

To measure impact, UNP employs robust monitoring, and evaluation systems that track local poverty rates, graduate employment outcomes, and the success of community development projects.

UNP affirms that poverty reduction strategies are embedded in its core functions, and the University continues to demonstrate a comprehensive approach to addressing SDG 1. Through these efforts, the University is making significant strides in eradicating poverty in the Ilocos region, and in its neighboring towns.
