The University of Northen Philippines in it’s A.Y. 2023-2024 enrollment showed a total of 18,678 during the first semester, slightly decreasing in the second semester with a total of 18,193 covering all the offerings of the university. Programs from colleges like College of Teacher Education and College of Business Administration and Accountancy, experiencing considerably higher enrollment than other programs of other colleges.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) as state university actively participates in the implementation of Republic Act No. 10931, known as the “Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act,” by serving as a conduit for the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES). As a state university, UNP facilitates the distribution of TES grants to qualified students, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their pursuit of higher education. This commitment to accessible education aligns with UNP’s mission to provide quality and inclusive tertiary education to deserving students, contributing to national development goals.

Scholarships create a win-win situation for both students and universities. They empower students to pursue their educational aspirations, while also enriching the university’s academic environment and contributing to its long-term success. In the University of Northern Philippines there is a notable decrease in the total number of scholarships from 4,140 in the first term to 2,584 in the second term, with Government-sponsored scholarship taking the bulk of the decrease. The majority of scholarships offered by UNP are government-sponsored, with 3,584 scholars in the First Term and 1,807 in the Second Term. This suggests a strong reliance on government support for student financial aid.

CHED-Tulong Dunong Program has the highest number of scholars, but it experiences a considerable drop from 982 to 747 between terms. ISEASP has a drastic decrease from 1,598 scholars in the First Term to only 3 in the second term. This could indicate a change in program availability or eligibility. CHED-TES scholarship appears only in the second Term with 183 scholars. The Study Privilege includes scholarships like the Adopt-A-School Program and Athletic Scholarships. It has a relatively small number of scholars compared to other categories. Government-Sponsored Scholarships has the largest, with various programs from CHED, DOH, DOST, and local government units. The significant decline in the second term could be attributed to program-specific factors or changes in government funding. Private Sponsored Scholarships while smaller in scale compared to government-sponsored scholarships, this category also sees an increase in the second term, indicating potential fluctuations in private funding.

UNP Law Clinic enhance learning opportunities to train Law Student Practitioners the art of lawyering. Further, it makes them appreciate the value of legal professional responsibility attach to the profession. This 1st Term of AY 2022-2023, our very own Law Student Practitioners with the supervision of our law faculty, provided public legal orientation on various laws (PD1602, RA9262, RA11313, RA10175) to the community and free legal assistance to the needy.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) takes an active role in addressing poverty through impactful extension programs that align with Sustainable Development Goal 1. These initiatives go beyond the campus walls to engage directly with communities and provide support where it’s needed most. The College of Teacher Education, for instance, conducts skills development training programs in partnership with local governments and organizations like Gawad Kalinga. These programs equip community members with valuable skills in areas like food production, enabling them to generate income and improve their livelihoods. Furthermore, UNP demonstrates its commitment to community well-being through initiatives like the “Gift Giving: Share the Love” program, which provides direct assistance to families facing economic hardship. By extending its resources and expertise to those in need, UNP fosters a spirit of collaboration and empowerment, contributing directly to poverty reduction efforts in the region.

BTLED, BTVTEd, MATLE programs hold skills training

The College of Teacher Education’s BTLEd, BTVTEd, and MATLE programs recently conducted a skills development training in Candon City aimed at reducing poverty by equipping community members with sustainable income-generating skills. In partnership with local government units and the Gawad Kalinga Foundation, the training focused on meal and nutrition planning, specifically snack production skills like buchi and churros making. Guided by field experts, participants learned practical skills in recipe creation, food safety, and quality control, empowering them to start small businesses and enhance their livelihoods. This initiative supports SDG 1 by providing community members with valuable, marketable skills to improve economic stability and well-being.

This initiative aims to promote local entrepreneurship, job creation. Students were given tips on how to properly craft crochet and produce dishwashing soap during the Yarn of Hope: Gantsilyo Design and Hope of Soap: Dishwashing Liquid Livelihood Training held at the UNP Hostel. For the TedTalk series,  Episode 1 focused on Unlocking the Secrets of Entrepreneurial Mindset, Episode 2: Marketing Initiatives in Digitalized Era, and Episode 3: Financial Guide of  Business Students.

On December 18, 2023, the Agrimensores Club of the University of Northern Philippines organized a Christmas outreach program, “Gift Giving: Share the Love,” in San Julian, Bantay, with the goal of spreading the true spirit of Christmas through acts of kindness and addressing poverty in the community, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1: No Poverty. The event, attended by club officers and members, was grounded in the belief that “giving is better than receiving,” and sought to provide tangible support to families facing economic hardship. Thanks to the financial contributions of BSGE students, the program successfully distributed gifts and essentials, alleviating some of the burdens felt by the community during the holiday season. The joy and gratitude expressed by the recipients highlighted the program’s impact in creating positive change, reinforcing the idea that collective efforts in addressing poverty can uplift lives and bring hope. This initiative serves as a reminder that even small acts of giving, when done together, can contribute significantly to reducing poverty and building a more inclusive society.

On September 26, 2023, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Region 1 held an orientation for the Philippine Startup Challenge at the University of Northern Philippines. The CCIT students and faculty were oriented on the importance of startups in the Philippine economy and the government’s support for them and were encouraged to have their startup, improving their sources of income.

The MSRS program aims to provide opportunities to deserving Filipino students willing to fulfill the mandatory return service, prioritizing applicants residing in areas without government physicians, Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA), or among the top twenty (20%) provinces and/or municipalities as identified by the PSA.
