SDG 10 - REDUCED INEQUALITIES
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) demonstrates a strong commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities through various initiatives, and the formulation of policies.
UNP actively works to reduce inequalities within, and among its stakeholders by implementing inclusive policies, and programs. The University’s admission standards welcome all individuals, regardless of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion, or economic status, ensuring equal access to quality education.
To address educational disparities, UNP partners with underserved communities, providing educational support, and resources to those who needs it the most. One notable endeavor is the SEA-Teacher Project which facilitates international student exchanges, contributing to reducing inequalities in access to quality education across borders.
UNP promotes equal opportunities through awareness campaigns; the University’s entry in a short film contest on statistical literacy empowers individuals, and communities to make informed choices, reducing knowledge inequalities, strengthened research collaborations; the 6th Regional Research Congress was celebrated with the theme, “Traversing pathways towards a sustainable future through interdisciplinary research,” promotes collaboration, and knowledge sharing, continued healthcare access; UNP conducts medical missions, and offers free healthcare services to underprivileged populations, addressing health inequalities, free legal assistance; the Law Clinic provides free legal aid to economically disadvantaged community members, promoting equal access to justice, and diverse representation; UNP’s increasingly diverse student body, workforce, and leadership reflect enhanced opportunities for all.
These efforts align with SDG 10’s targets, particularly by promoting social, economic, and political inclusion, ensuring equal opportunities, and adopting policies for greater equality. As we address various aspects of inequality, UNP contributes to creating a more equitable society both locally, and globally.
Seminar-Workshop on Child and Youth Welfare Protection - Gender and Culture-Based Approach (31st National Children’s Month) (Nov. 30, 2023)
This is a dedicated extension activity held in celebration of the 31st National Children’s Month. This program aims to deepen understanding of the unique needs of children and youth, emphasizing a protective approach that respects both gender and cultural diversity. Through interactive workshops, expert-led sessions, and group discussions, participants gain insights into safeguarding children’s rights, addressing issues like abuse and neglect, and creating inclusive environments that honor cultural values. The seminar promotes strategies for nurturing safe and supportive spaces, equipping attendees with the tools to advocate for and protect young people effectively. By fostering a holistic, inclusive approach, this activity seeks to empower communities to better support the well-being and development of children and youth.
Seminar-Workshop on Ending Violence Against Women (18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women) (Dec. 7, 2023)
This is an empowering extension activity conducted in alignment with the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women. This program aims to raise awareness and educate participants on the prevalence, impact, and prevention of gender-based violence. Through a combination of informative sessions, interactive workshops, and open discussions, attendees learn about legal protections, support resources, and strategies to combat violence against women in their communities. The seminar emphasizes advocacy, encouraging participants to become proactive allies in promoting women’s safety and rights. By fostering a supportive environment for education and dialogue, this activity empowers individuals to contribute to a culture of respect, equality, and zero tolerance for violence against women.
UNP inks MOA with Sta. Maria barrio school
On November 17, 2023, the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) formalized a partnership with Ag-agrao, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur, and Ag-agrao National High School through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signed by local leaders, including Mr. Danilo B. Derige and Mr. Rolando Buenavista Jr. This collaboration emphasizes the principles of Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities, highlighting the significance of creating equitable opportunities for all community members through education and local partnerships. The MOA aims to enhance the quality of education and promote community development in Ag-agrao by fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Key initiatives include providing medical and dental services, skills training, and technology transfer, which are all designed to uplift the well-being of community members and reduce disparities in access to essential resources. Additionally, the partnership focuses on disaster risk reduction and management training, equipping residents with critical knowledge and skills to effectively respond to emergencies. By addressing these needs, the initiative works to ensure that vulnerable groups within the community are prepared and resilient in the face of challenges. Through this collaboration, UNP and the Ag-agrao community are committed to integrating sustainable development practices into the educational framework, empowering residents with access to resources and opportunities that foster social equity and inclusiveness. This initiative reflects a shared dedication to reducing inequalities and enhancing the quality of life for all, contributing to the broader goals of sustainable development and social justice.

This activity serves to instill a sense of civic duty & responsibility in citizens. It emphasizes the importance of recognizing & respecting diverse cultural backgrounds & gender identities within the context of civic engagement. It promotes inclusivity, equality, & empowerment for individuals, regardless of their gender or cultural heritage.
Legal Aid Project
UNP Law Clinic enhance learning opportunities to train Law Student Practitioners the art of lawyering. Further, it makes them appreciate the value of legal professional responsibility attach to the profession. This 1st Term of AY 2022-2023, our very own Law Student Practitioners with the supervision of our law faculty, provided public legal orientation on various laws (PD1602, RA9262, RA11313, RA10175) to the community and free legal assistance to the needy.
Project SILNAG (Students of Public Administration Interface with the Local Governments and National Government Agencies at the Grassroots)
UNP Law Clinic enhance learning opportunities to train Law Student Practitioners the art of lawyering. Further, it makes them appreciate the value of legal professional responsibility attach to the profession. This 1st Term of AY 2022-2023, our very own Law Student Practitioners with the supervision of our law faculty, provided public legal orientation on various laws (PD1602, RA9262, RA11313, RA10175) to the community and free legal assistance to the needy.Project SILNAG (Students of Public Administration Interface with the Local Governments and National Government Agencies at the Grassroots) is an extension activity of the Master of Public Administration Program that aims to promote good governance and the provision of better public services to the various local government units in the provinces of Ilocos Sur and Abra. This project includes conducting capability training seminars among barangay and youth leaders, community outreach program for children, fostering partnership with LGUs, and benchmarking activities about the best practices of local government units in public service.
