SDG 16 - PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) is committed to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, which promotes peaceful and inclusive societies. UNP strives to build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions through transparent governance, participatory decision-making, and strong institutional mechanisms. By upholding the rule of law, human rights, and anti-corruption measures, UNP aims to create a safe and just campus environment for all.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) recently welcomed a new member to its Board of Regents. Hon. Jhunel F. Tanurio, the current president of the UNP Student Council, was officially appointed to the board.


This appointment underscores the university’s commitment to student involvement in decision-making processes. As a member of the Board of Regents, Tanurio will have a significant role in shaping the future of UNP.

UNP promotes inclusive decision-making processes that involve various stakeholders. A key example of this is the inclusion of a Student Regent on the University’s Board of Regents. The 2023 Student Regent, Hon. Jhunel F. Tanurio, serves as the President of the Student Council, and represents the student body in high-level decision-making. This ensures that student perspectives are considered in University governance.

UNP engages with local stakeholders through initiatives like research agenda consultations, which involve faculty, staff, and students in shaping the University’s research direction. These practices reflect UNP’s dedication to transparent, and participatory governance.

A key aspect of UNP’s approach is its focus on client satisfaction, as emphasized on page 18 of the Quality Manual. This client-centric approach extends to the University’s engagement with local stakeholders, ensuring their voices are heard in decision-making processes.

UNP utilizes a Relevant Interested Parties Needs and Expectations Log (RIPNEL) to systematically identify, and track the requirements of various stakeholders. This tool ensures a comprehensive understanding of community needs, and expectations.

Conduct of Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) joined the nation in observing Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Week from November 13 to 19, 2023. The celebration, themed “People First: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengthen Prevention,” aimed to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and promote compassionate treatment for individuals struggling with addiction. Various activities, including a Zumba session and the election of student representatives to regional anti-drug councils, were organized to support this cause.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) Student Council, under the leadership of former President Daryll Jeremy Virtudes, was recognized for its outstanding efforts in combating crime and drug abuse. The council’s innovative programs and initiatives, implemented in collaboration with local councils, earned them a 2nd runner-up award at the Philippine Anti-Illegal Drug Strategy Conference for Higher Education Institutions in Region 1. This achievement highlights the university’s commitment to creating a safe and drug-free campus environment.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) Student Council, in partnership with the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS), organized a Drug and Anti-Crime Education Caravan to empower young student leaders. The day-long event, held on June 9, 2023, featured lectures on ethical leadership and drug awareness. The initiative aimed to promote a drug-free academic community and equip student leaders with the knowledge and skills to address social issues. By engaging with students from Lussoc National High School and San Juan National High School, UNP demonstrated its commitment to fostering responsible and ethical leadership among the youth.

The Edifice proudly participated in the 2023 Press Freedom Celebration, held on May 25-26, 2023, with the theme “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for All Other Human Rights.” The event, marking the 30th anniversary of World Press Freedom, underscored the importance of solidarity in journalism and the vital role of press freedom in a democratic society. Students from the University of Northern Philippines took part in various competitions, showcasing their skills in writing, debate, and broadcasting. Among the notable achievements were John Adrielle Donato and Eliza Joy R. Gundran, who secured first place in their respective writing categories. The celebration emphasized how freedom of expression is not only essential for individual rights but also for the advancement of other human rights, allowing marginalized voices to be heard and holding powerful institutions accountable. The event aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, which calls for promoting the rule of law and ensuring equal access to justice for all. One key lesson from this event is the understanding that press freedom is a cornerstone for a just society, as it enables transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights. As students witnessed through the event, the power of expression can lead to societal transformation, shaping a future where justice and equity prevail.

UNP’s Free Legal Clinic provides free legal advice and assistance to the university community and the general public. The clinic is staffed by volunteer lawyers who offer legal services on various legal matters, such as civil law, criminal law, labor law, and family law. By providing accessible legal services, UNP aims to empower individuals and promote social justice.

 In terms of educating graduates to support justice, UNP’s College of Law plays a crucial role. UNP has produced 334 graduates in law and enforcement related courses out of a total of 3494 graduates. This represents approximately 9% of the total graduate population, indicating UNP’s significant contribution to producing professionals equipped to uphold justice, and strengthen institutions in the country.

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) is actively collaborating with local government units and other government agencies to advance Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16, which promotes peaceful and inclusive societies. By forging strong partnerships, UNP aims to strengthen governance, reduce violence, and protect human rights.

Project Panagawis

The Philippine National Police – Regional Office 1 (PNP-RO1) visited the University of Northern Philippines (UNP) to conduct a career symposium on May 23, 2023. The event, titled “Project PANAGAWIS,” aimed to guide graduating UNP students on the application process to join the Philippine National Police. The symposium was held at the University Gymnasium and was organized in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS).
