SDG 3 - GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
The University of Northern Philippines is earnestly working towards the achievement of SDG3- ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all, at all ages. It could be observed through the academic programs to the campus initiatives.
UNP recognizes the importance of a holistic approach to health, encompassing physical, mental, and social well-being.. The university encourages regular physical activity through sports programs. Additionally, the university provides counseling services, workshops, and support groups to help students and personnel cope with stress, anxiety, and depression.
More than that, UNP is committed to prevent and control diseases. The university offers vaccination campaigns to provide the campus community with protective measures from infectious diseases. It collaborates with the local health authorities on matters of health education and awareness campaigns.
Proportion of Graduates in health professions
The University is at the forefront in advocating improved health outcomes, and increased awareness of good health, and well-being.
17% of graduates pursuing healthcare careers signifies UNP’s contribution to the healthcare workforce. This highlights the university’s commitment to producing skilled healthcare professionals who can address the growing healthcare needs of the community and the nation.
Collaborations with Health Institutions
Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3), which focuses on ensuring healthy lives, and promoting well-being for all ages, is closely interconnected with education, and the proportion of graduates. The University is at the forefront in advocating improved health outcomes, and increased awareness of good health, and well-being.
1. UNP’s Partnership to Empower Indigent Mothers and Children
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), in collaboration with the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society NWL, Ilocos Sur Medical Society, Philippine Pediatric Society, Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists, Metrovigan Hospital, UNP College of Medicine, Rotaract Club of UNP – PFC, Philippine Dermatological Association-Ilocos Sur Chapter, Philippine Nurses Association-Ilocos Sur Chapter, ROM Pharma, Cathay Drug Company Inc., and Rural Health Units and City Health Offices within the Metro Vigan area (Caoayan, Vigan, Bantay, Sta. Catalina, San Vicente, San Ildefonso, and Santa), has launched the Health and Maternal Project (CHAMP) LEVEL UP initiative.
This comprehensive project aims to address the health and well-being of indigent multigravida women and their children. By focusing on the 1,000 critical days of a child’s life, the project seeks to improve maternal and child health outcomes and break the cycle of poverty.
2. UNP, PNAA, and PNAIS Collaborate for Successful 6th PNAAF Conference
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP), in partnership with the Philippine Nurses Association of America (PNAA) and the Philippine Nurses Association – Ilocos Sur Chapter (PNAIS), successfully hosted the 6th Philippine Nurses Association Academic Forum (PNAAF) Collaborative Conference. Held in the historic city of Vigan, the two-day event, themed “Moving Forward with Innovations, Opportunities, and Successes,” brought together nurses, educators, and healthcare professionals from various sectors.
The conference featured a diverse range of activities, including plenary sessions, workshops, and poster presentations. Renowned experts in the field of nursing, both local and international, shared their insights on current trends, challenges, and best practices. The event also highlighted innovative research studies conducted by UNP nursing students and faculty.
Through this collaborative effort, UNP, PNAA, and PNAIS aim to advance the nursing profession, promote evidence-based practice, and improve patient care. The conference provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and professional development.
3. Blood letting activity with Red Cross
On December 6, 2023, the Junior Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (JPICE) – UNP Chapter hosted the Pint for Lifelines: A Blood Donation Drive at the UNP College of Engineering, with the theme “Fostering Community-Centric Resilience: A Lifesaving Solidarity through Bloodletting Activity.” In partnership with the Philippine Red Cross Vigan City Chapter and Dr. Daune Alden Oandasan from the Medical Services Office, the event aimed to support local blood banks and hospitals in maintaining a stable blood supply. The drive successfully collected 64 units of blood, making a significant contribution to saving lives and fostering a culture of altruism within the university.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-being, as it directly addresses the critical need for accessible healthcare resources and highlights the importance of community involvement in public health. One important learning from this activity is that promoting good health and well-being is not only about providing medical care but also about ensuring that life-saving resources, such as blood, are readily available in times of need, demonstrating the power of collective action in improving health outcomes.
UNPs Sport Facilities
Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) emphasizes the importance of promoting health, and well-being for all ages. The University contributes to this goal through its shared sports facilities. These facilities, including a gymnasium, track and field area, and various courts, promote physical activity, and healthy lifestyles among students, and the local community. By providing access to quality sports infrastructure, UNP encourages regular exercise, team sports, and recreational activities, which are crucial for maintaining good health, and preventing non-communicable diseases.

1. Sexual and Reproductive health care services for students and personnel
UNP is continuously providing sexual, and reproductive health care services to students and personnel. Through its colleges, and offices, UNP offers educational programs, and outreach activities focused on reproductive health, women’s empowerment, and child care. The University conducts seminar-workshops on topics such as family planning, maternal health, and child safety. These initiatives aim to empower students with knowledge and skills related to sexual, and reproductive health.
- Panagtubay ti Masakbayan kas Sang-sangkamaysa a UNPian: HIV/AIDS Seminar – Psychology Students Organization
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) recently took a proactive step in addressing the issue of HIV/AIDS by organizing an informative seminar. In collaboration with the AYAT advocacy, the event aimed to raise awareness, promote safe sex practices, and combat stigma associated with the disease.
The seminar featured interactive discussions led by DOH-certified health professionals. Participants gained valuable insights into HIV/AIDS prevention, transmission, and treatment. By encouraging open dialogue and providing accurate information, the university aims to empower students to make informed decisions about their sexual health.
Through initiatives like this, UNP demonstrates its commitment to creating a safe and healthy campus environment. By addressing sensitive topics and promoting responsible behavior, the university is making a positive impact on the lives of its students.
2. Mental support for students
UNP prioritizes mental health support for students and personnel through various initiatives coordinated with the Office of Student Affairs (OSA,), Human Res and Guidance Services. Initiatives focuses on therapeutic activities, stress-reduction techniques, and a safe space for students to express themselves. Additionally, the University conducts mental health awareness campaigns, growth sessions, and provides free mental health consultations with on-campus psychologists. These efforts promote good mental health, encourage help-seeking behavior, and provide accessible support services for students, demonstrating UNP’s commitment to creating a mentally healthy academic community.
- Project Daisy 2.0: Spreading Positivity Through Words
The Psychology Students Organization (PSO) is launching Project Daisy 2.0 to spread positivity and inspire students during Mental Health Awareness Month. Recognizing the power of words to uplift and motivate, the project aims to create a supportive online community by sharing inspiring messages and promoting self-care. By addressing mental health concerns and encouraging positive thinking, Project Daisy 2.0 seeks to empower students to lead healthier and happier lives.
- College/ High School Life, “I Can Survive” for Freshmen and Transferees (Academic Competence and Empowerment Program)
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) guidance and counseling services recently empowered its incoming students with essential academic skills through a seminar titled “Academic Competence and Empowerment: Learning Recovery.” Led by the experienced learning resource provider, Mr. Edmar M. Paguirigan, the seminar aimed to enhance students’ academic preparedness, foster a sense of responsibility, and motivate them to excel in their chosen programs. By providing practical strategies and guidance, UNP is committed to supporting students’ success and ensuring a smooth transition into higher education.
3. Mental support for staff
UNP provides mental health support for staff, and offers various initiatives to promote mental well-being among its employees, including awareness campaigns, stress management workshops, and access to counseling services. Additionally, UNP provides information on free mental health support services available in the community, and signposts to professional mental health providers when needed. These efforts demonstrate UNP’s commitment in promoting a mentally healthy work environment, and supporting the overall well-being of its staff.
- UNP’s Fitness Fridays: A Dance to Wellness
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) recently concluded its successful “Fitness Fridays” initiative. This weekly Zumba session, organized by the Office of Student Affairs and Services (OSAS) in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Human Resource Management Unit, was a highlight of the May-June 2023 academic term.
The program aimed to promote a healthier and happier campus community by offering a fun and effective way to de-stress, improve mood, and enhance overall well-being. By combining energetic dance moves with a supportive atmosphere, Fitness Fridays provided a much-needed break from academic pressures and encouraged participants to prioritize their physical and mental health.
The initiative was well-received by students, faculty, and staff, who actively participated in the weekly Zumba sessions. The positive impact of the program was evident in the increased energy levels, improved mood, and strengthened social bonds among the UNP community.
Smoke-free University
UNP has implemented a comprehensive smoke-free policy in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal 3, and national tobacco control legislation. UNP’s premises are designated as a no-smoking environment due to the health risks associated with smoking. This policy is coordinated through the Office of the Vice President for Finance and Administration (VFAD), Records Office, and Legal Office to ensure consistent implementation across campus. The University actively promotes awareness about the dangers of tobacco use, and supports smoking cessation efforts. UNP’s commitment to a smoke-free environment extends beyond compliance with the Philippine Clean Air Act, demonstrating its dedication to protecting the health, and well-being of students, faculty, and staff while contributing to broader public health goals.
