The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) demonstrates a strong commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality through its comprehensive approach to gender mainstreaming, and women’s empowerment.
Description: The university celebrated National Women's Month with the theme "Lipunang Patas sa Bagong Pilipinas; Kakayahan ng Kababaihan, patutunayan!" This celebration included a mass to advocate for women's empowerment and inclusive development for all. It highlights UNP's commitment to creating a fair and inclusive environment, free from discrimination.
Description: The CGAD, in partnership with the Ilocos Sur Community College, conducted a Gender Sensitivity Training for teachers. This training aims to raise awareness of gender roles and issues, ensuring that women and men have equal opportunities in educational and professional settings. It directly contributes to building a more inclusive society by promoting gender-sensitive practices.
Description: The university participated in the nationwide 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) with the theme “VAW Bigyang-Wakas, Ngayon na ang Oras!”. The campaign aimed to raise public awareness that VAW is a public crime and mobilized the community to prevent violence against women and girls through various activities, including symposiums and a film festival.
Description: The Open University and the CGAD launched a symposium highlighting critical laws such as the Anti-Rape Law, Anti-Sexual Harassment Act, and Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act. This event was a key part of the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW, educating the community on the legal frameworks designed to protect women and promoting a safer, more equitable society.
Description: The Medical Services Office and the Center for Gender and Development collaborated to establish a breastfeeding room in the university. This initiative provides a private, hygienic, and comfortable space for working mothers, recognizing and supporting the unpaid care work that mothers perform and enabling them to balance their professional responsibilities with their maternal duties.
Description: The DSSP, in partnership with the CGAD, administered the "Juana Film Festival" as part of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC). The film festival featured short films that shed light on issues of violence against women, aiming to fortify justice and equal opportunities for all genders. This initiative raises awareness and promotes a culture of non-violence.
Description: The College of Law provided lectures on the "Safe Spaces Act" to Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs). This initiative educates a vulnerable population on the importance of gender-responsive laws. By raising awareness of legislation that protects individuals from sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based violence, the program helps create a more just and safe environment for all.
Description: The College of Medicine celebrated International Women's Day by conducting a knowledge-sharing session on cervical cancer. The activity aimed to raise awareness about a significant health risk for women, promoting early detection and prevention. This aligns with the goal of reducing non-communicable diseases and promoting health education.
Description: The Open University and the Center for Gender and Development (CGAD) hosted a symposium titled "Creating Inclusive Spaces: Strategies for LGBTQ+ Advocacy in Academic Settings." The event addressed the pressing need for LGBTQ+ representation and support within the educational sector, ensuring that all students feel safe, respected, and valued, and directly addressing social inequalities and discrimination.
Description: The Center for Gender and Development (CGAD) extended its services to a local high school with a lecture on gender roles and a signing of a memorandum of agreement to formally adopt the school. The initiative promotes a gender-sensitive academic environment, ensuring that women and men have equal opportunities in education and society.
