SDG 1 - NO POVERTY
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) affirms a strong commitment to Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger through various initiatives that align with the goal’s targets.
Description: The university partnered with the DSWD to provide a cash-for-work program for 500 graduates. This initiative provided a crucial source of income and work experience, directly assisting vulnerable graduates in their transition to the workforce and helping to reduce poverty.
Description: The College of Business Administration and Accountancy, in collaboration with the University Extension, recently conducted a Gender Harmonized Skills Training on Fish and Meat Processing cum Training on Agri-products Marketing Strategies on June 18, 2024 at Sitio Agumanay, Gayaman, Luba, Abra.
Description: The Ilocos Sur Provincial Police Office (ISPPO) teamed with the University of Northern Philippines in a skills training for the residents of Sta. Lucia Ilocos Sur and selected members of the ISPPO in Ayusan, Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur on March 14, 2024.
Description: UNP Community Outreach Program: Nurturing Nature, Nurturing Community CTech holds two programs for community outreach. The College of Technology, under the leadership of Dean Dr. Julius Moises S. Albalos, organized two extension programs as part of the community outreach program of UNP’s 59th founding anniversary on October 17, 2024.
Description: The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Regional Office I headed by Mr. Kendall Gatan, OIC- Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, in close coordination with the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Networks in Region I, held the first regional gathering and appreciation day for selected SUN Networks for Academe, Civil Society Alliance, Business and Youth Sectors in Region I at the Nutridense FMC Pavilion, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan on May 24, 2024.
Description: The College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), through the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration major in Human Resource Development Management (HRDM) program, conducted a needs assessment survey in Bannuar, San Juan, Ilocos Sur on April 30.
Description: The University Extension Office (UEO) held a training program to enhance faculty skills in documenting and packaging extension activities. This initiative is crucial for effectively showcasing the university's community engagement projects to external partners and funding bodies. By improving this process, UNP can better mobilize resources and support for its poverty-reduction programs.
Description: The UEO and OSAS collaborated to conduct a livelihood skills training on soap making in Burgos, Ilocos Sur. This hands-on program provided community members with a marketable skill, empowering them to generate income. This directly helps to reduce poverty by giving people a new source of economic resources.
Description: The university partnered with the community of Pagsanaaan Sur on a marine conservation program. This project helps protect the local marine environment and its resources, which are a vital source of income for many residents. By safeguarding these resources, the program helps build the community's resilience against environmental and economic shocks.
BTLEd, BTVTEd, MATLE programs hold skills training
The College of Teacher Education’s BTLEd, BTVTEd, and MATLE programs recently conducted a skills development training in Candon City aimed at reducing poverty by equipping community members with sustainable income-generating skills. In partnership with local government units and the Gawad Kalinga Foundation, the training focused on meal and nutrition planning, specifically snack production skills like buchi and churros making. Guided by field experts, participants learned practical skills in recipe creation, food safety, and quality control, empowering them to start small businesses and enhance their livelihoods. This initiative supports SDG 1 by providing community members with valuable, marketable skills to improve economic stability and well-being.
Gift Giving: Share the Love
On December 18, 2023, the Agrimensores Club of the University of Northern Philippines organized a Christmas outreach program, “Gift Giving: Share the Love,” in San Julian, Bantay, with the goal of spreading the true spirit of Christmas through acts of kindness and addressing poverty in the community, in alignment with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1: No Poverty. The event, attended by club officers and members, was grounded in the belief that “giving is better than receiving,” and sought to provide tangible support to families facing economic hardship. Thanks to the financial contributions of BSGE students, the program successfully distributed gifts and essentials, alleviating some of the burdens felt by the community during the holiday season. The joy and gratitude expressed by the recipients highlighted the program’s impact in creating positive change, reinforcing the idea that collective efforts in addressing poverty can uplift lives and bring hope. This initiative serves as a reminder that even small acts of giving, when done together, can contribute significantly to reducing poverty and building a more inclusive society.
"Buntis Day": Women's Health Awareness Training Program (LGU Cabugao)
As mandated by Presidential Proclamation 569, the National Day for Pregnant Women aims to promote the needs of pregnant women in order to have a healthier pregnancy. It also aims to recognize all pregnant women who are considered heroes in their own right as they bring and nurture another life into the world.
