SDG 3 - GOOD HEALTH AND WELL-BEING
The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) proves a comprehensive commitment to good health and well-being through initiatives spanning mental health services, disease prevention, emergency preparedness, and healthcare professional development. UNP addresses mental health holistically through its Guidance and Counseling Services' "Starguider & Guidvance" team, leading capability workshops for class advisers, growth sessions for medical students, test anxiety management seminars, and the "ReENGage" virtual event on overcoming demotivation. The Psychology Students Organization provides free mental health consultations, while bi-annual team-building activities themed "Stronger minds, stronger teams" promote workplace wellness for non-teaching personnel. The university's commitment to mental health expertise is demonstrated by educator and psychologist Kristina Camille V. Pacris-Quitevis' recognition as Outstanding Educator and Psychologist of the Year.
UNP implements comprehensive disease prevention programs addressing both communicable and non-communicable diseases. The College of Medicine conducted awareness sessions on tobacco control during World No Tobacco Day and cervical cancer prevention during International Women's Day. The Medical Services Office orchestrated HIV/AIDS talks and testing events, World AIDS Day red ribbon distributions to reduce stigma, and oral health programs for preschool and elementary pupils during National Dental Health Month. The university launched Project Dormitour to combat dengue, organized Bakuna Eskwela vaccination services for young learners, and led campus-wide breast cancer awareness campaigns. The Co-Love Festival featured heart health lectures, training, and bloodletting activities, while the National Service Training Program conducted community health bloodletting initiatives. UNP strengthens emergency preparedness through the College of Health Sciences' Emergency Health Services Week and direct health service delivery to communities like Manueva. The Medical Services Office conducted basic first aid seminars, while collaboration with the Philippine Red Cross delivered Standard First Aid and Basic Life Support training for personnel. Nursing students participated in crisis simulations, BS Emergency and Health Services students advanced through EMT skills training, and the College of Criminal Justice Education partnered with the College of Health Sciences for fire safety and suppression workshops. The Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management workshop exemplifies inter-college collaboration strengthening resilience against health-related and climate-related disasters.
UNP prioritizes sexual and reproductive health through infrastructure development and community education. The Medical Services Office and Center for Gender and Development established a breastfeeding room supporting working mothers and infant health, while the College of Health Sciences conducted maternal and child health seminar-workshops in partner communities. The Center for Gender and Development implemented gender and health seminars addressing how gender impacts health outcomes and launched the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women featuring Zumba events and the original advocacy song "Matapang" to promote mental and physical well-being. The College of Public Administration's Batonlagip lecture series addressed governance, culture, and gender, fostering inclusive community health. UNP produces highly competent healthcare professionals contributing to universal health coverage, celebrating 73 newly-minted physicians who passed the April 2024 Physician Licensure Examination. The BS Midwifery program ranked fifth nationally with 100% first-time taker passing rate among 62 graduates, demonstrating quality education directly impacting maternal and child health outcomes. The College of Nursing achieved 95.52% passing rate for first-time takers in November 2024, exceeding the national average with 219 new nurses. The College of Hospitality and Tourism Management championed Kusina Ilocandia 2024, promoting healthy cooking practices, while College of Technology faculty achieved NC II certification in automotive servicing, enhancing educational quality and safety standards.
UNP promotes holistic well-being through physical activity, nutrition, and workplace wellness. The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs conducted social and moral enhancement programs for graduating students, while the university suspended classes during extreme heat to prioritize health and safety, issuing public advisories on heat-related illness prevention. UNP participated in inter-collegiate basketball tournaments including CHED All-Star Basketball Friendship Games 2024 and celebrated PathFit Day focused on physical fitness under "Move, Play, Achieve: Igniting the Passion for Sports and Celebrating the Power of Movement." Family Day celebrations strengthened community bonds promoting positive work environments. The College of Medicine, partnering with the Ilocos Sur Medical Society and Rotary Club, implemented feeding programs providing food and monitoring physical health of nutritionally-challenged elementary pupils aged 6–11 for over 150 days. Through partnerships with the National Nutrition Council and Scaling Up Nutrition Movement Network, benchmarking collaborations with DMMMSU on NSTP implementation, and systematic documentation of 57 initiatives across mental health, disease prevention, emergency preparedness, reproductive health, professional development, and wellness promotion, UNP demonstrates that achieving good health requires coordinated multi-sectoral efforts, positioning the university as a vital contributor to health advancement and universal health coverage in the Ilocos region and beyond.
