SDG 7 - AFFORDABLE AND CLEAN ENERGY

The University of Northern Philippines (UNP) proves commitment to affordable and clean energy through initiatives covering infrastructure partnerships, community capacity building, and technological innovation. UNP received two electric tricycles (e-trikes) from the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur headed by Hon. Jeremias Singson, a partnership promoting the use of clean, electric-powered transportation on campus contributing to reduced carbon emissions and the adoption of sustainable mobility solutions. This initiative demonstrates the university's commitment to transitioning away from fossil fuel-dependent transportation systems toward cleaner alternatives that support environmental sustainability while providing affordable transportation options for the university community.

UNP empowers communities with practical skills necessary for safe and efficient energy management. The university provided training to residents of a Santa barangay on practical house-wiring, equipping community members with the skills to safely and efficiently manage electrical systems. This foundational knowledge is crucial for adopting clean and affordable energy technologies, as proper electrical infrastructure is essential for the integration of renewable energy systems such as solar panels and energy-efficient appliances in homes. By providing this training, UNP enables communities to participate in the clean energy transition while ensuring electrical safety standards are maintained, reducing risks associated with improper wiring and enhancing capacity for future renewable energy adoption.

UNP advances technological innovation supporting clean energy development through research and development initiatives. The College of Engineering launched a new drone that can be used for various applications including surveying for renewable energy projects, promoting innovation in the energy sector. Drone technology enables efficient site assessment for solar farms, wind turbines, and other renewable energy installations, reducing the time and cost associated with traditional surveying methods while providing detailed aerial data for optimal energy infrastructure placement. This technological advancement demonstrates UNP's commitment to leveraging modern tools to accelerate the deployment of clean energy solutions and enhance the efficiency of renewable energy project development. Through these three documented initiatives spanning electric transportation adoption, community electrical skills training, and innovative technology deployment, UNP demonstrates that achieving affordable and clean energy requires coordinated efforts across infrastructure development, capacity building, and technological innovation, positioning the university as a contributor to energy transition and sustainability in the Ilocos region.
